Alex Silverman is transferring to Entercom news KYW (1060) Philadelphia as PD. Silverman, who is inbound from the assistant director of news and programming post at news sister WCBS New York (770), succeeds Steve Butler, who last month announced his decision to step down from his position as KYW director of news and programing and news format captain for the company. Silverman starts his new post on Sept. 24. Entercom has not yet named a replacement for the news format captain position.

“We are thrilled to welcome Alex to the KYW Newsradio family,” senior VP/market manager David Yadgaroff said. “He’s a great fit to lead this iconic Philadelphia brand into an exciting next chapter.”

Silverman joined Entercom in 2011 as an anchor for “Newsradio 880” WCBS coming to the station from Bonneville news/talk KIRO-FM Seattle (97.3). He won Edward R. Murrow Awards for his coverage of Hurricane Sandy and the New York City transportation crisis. Silverman was upped to assistant director of news and programming in January and was instrumental in the recent re-branding of the legendary station.

“KYW Newsradio is the beating heart of Philadelphia,” Silverman added. “I’m incredibly excited and honored to lead the top-notch team of news professionals who make it vital, both now and into the future.”

Butler’s tenure at KYW spans 30 years across three stints, the most recent beginning in 1997. His connection to the station dates back to 1974 when he participated in the station’s “Newstudies” program for high school seniors, where he attended classes about broadcast news conducted by station staffers. During his college years at Temple University in Philadelphia he worked as a desk assistant in the KYW newsroom. He joined KYW in 1978 as a desk assistant and was upped to news writer and reporter a year later, remaining in that role until 1985. After a year away from the station, working as a field producer at WCAU-TV Philadelphia, Butler returned to KYW in 1986 as news director and executive editor. He joined Inside Radio in 1989, overseeing editorial operations and helping launch the first daily trade publication for the U.S. radio industry, before returning to the station in 1997.

Butler said he will stay on at KYW for a few weeks after Silverman’s arrival and then decide on his next move. “I’ve had some exciting conversations about possibilities for ‘my next act,’” he told Inside Radio. “But nothing is locked down for certain yet.”
